The Benefits of Hop Extracts And How To Use Them In The Brewing Process

The benefits of hop extracts banner

More and more brewers across the country are experimenting with Hop Extracts, and incorporating them into their core brewing process. When you consider the potential benefits of Hop Extracts, it’s not surprising to see why brewers are making this change. Extracts offer powerful ways to improve brewing efficiency. They also allow brewers to improve and even supercharge bittering, flavor, and aroma characteristics to their beers. So let’s explore the benefits of different Hop Extracts and how to use them in the brewing process.

Using Hop Extracts During The Brewing Processes

Hop Extract can be used for bittering, aroma, flavor, or all of the above. In any scenario, the extract can be used as an addition or direct replacement to traditional T90 Pellets.

In The Boil Kettle

When used for bittering, Hop Extract is typically added to the wort early in the boil.

In The Whirlpool

You treat the extract just like traditional T-90 pellets, pouring it directly into the whirlpool at any time you
prefer.

In Primary Fermentation

Certain extracts can also be used as flavor enhancers during primary fermentation. The key differences are that you need to ensure the extract doesn’t infect the rest of the brew and that it can’t solidify at colder temperatures.

CO2 Extraction Explained

CO2 Hop Extract is a concentrated form of hops produced using Supercritical CO2 Extraction. This process separates the essential oils and alpha acids from the leafy material. The result is a resin that is much more potent than whole hops or hop pellets.

Because CO2 Hop Extract is substantially more concentrated than whole hops or hop pellets, brewers can use less of it to achieve the same level of bitterness, aroma, or flavor. This can save brewers money, reduce the amount of trub, and minimize cleanup during the brewing process.

Hop Extracts Reduce Costs and Improve Brewing Efficiency

More Profit Per Batch

Replacing and/or reducing T-90 Pellets during the brewing process increases the available liquid volume. More volume means more beer per batch and therefore larger potential sales volumes per batch.

Lower Shipping Costs

A single pallet of hops contains 25 cases, with an average shipping cost of $349. Hop Extracts weigh less than traditional pellets and can potentially save over 70% on shipping costs.

More Storage Space

A single pallet of hops takes up 46.6 cubic feet or 13.3 square feet of storage space. Hop Extracts can use up to 95% less space, freeing up storage for other essential ingredients or more beer.

Reduce Environmental Waste

Reducing the volume of hop pellets translates to less plastic and cardboard waste, and less trub means less water waste during the cleanup process.
